ABERDARE NATIONAL PARK

The Aberdares, which form the steep eastern edge of the Rift Valley and is the third highest massif in the country, with dramatic peaks, deep valleys, and spectacular waterfalls cascading down the rock face. In the southern slopes of the Aberdares Mountains are two exciting tree hotels – The Ark and Treetops. The Aberdares come to a peak at about 4,000m and the middle and upper reaches are densely forested with thickets of bamboo, giant heath and tussock grass.

Because of the dense vegetation, it is not always easy to catch sight of the animals while driving through the park. The best way to see them is to visit one of the purpose built game viewing lodges, such as The Ark or Treetops. The Animals observed around a floodlit watering hole in the park include; Elephants, the endangered Black Rhino, leopard, black and white Colobus monkey. Rarer sightings include those of lions, the golden cat and the bongo (an elusive forest antelope), baboons, black and white Colobus monkeys and Sykes monkeys.
