KIWAYU ISLAND

Kiwayu Island is located on the far northeast of the archipelago and is part of the Kiunga Marine National Reserve. Marine National Reserve was opened in 1979, and has a reputation for having some of the best coral reefs interspersed with limestone islands in Kenya.

The stunningly remote and beautiful Kiwayu is the furthest north of the islands in the coast area. Around 10km long and on average only about 500m wide the island is essentially a sand spit with mangrove swamps and a small village on the landward lagoon, a broad sandy beach and some modest reefs on the ocean side. This is a fabulous spot, one of the most alluring locations on the whole of the East African coast.

The main economic activity is fishing, there is one school, no clinic and one well on the island. The main attraction for tourists on Kiwayuu are the tidal pools and snorkeling/diving pools located on the eastern side of the island (the Indian Ocean side).
